Hydrogen Powered Green GT H2 to run at this year's Le Mans

A hydrogen powered racer called the Green GT H2 will be competing at this year's Le Mans. The Green GT H2 has been approved by ACO ( the organization that governs the famed 24 hour race and its associate series) and will line up as an experimental car from the 56th garage on the pit line.

The Green GT H2 resembles some current LMP1 and LMP2 type racers, but it's what powers this incredible machines that separates it from just about anything out there at the moment. A hydrogen fuel cell powers two batteries to give the Green GT H2 a solid 537bhp and an incredible 3,000lb-ft (about three times as much as a Bugatti Veyron).

Le Mans is of course all about endurance. Some cars make up for the lack of power by spending less time refueling in the pits. That's where the Green GT H2 may struggle just a little bit. The tank can only hold about 40minutes worth of hydrogen, meaning that the H2 will need to refuel at least 36 times over the course of the 24-hour event. 

Still, a hydrogen powered car actually competing in Le Mans is an achievement in itself. If the Green GT H2 proves a success, the hydrogen technology fueling the racer find its way to a whole bunch of cars in the very near future.
